Morningside Village

User manual

1. Finding your way around

The app opens on the estate's home page. The menu works differently on a phone and on a computer.

  • On a phone the menu is the three dots at the top right. Tap it to open the full list of pages, and tap a page to go there. The bar along the bottom of the screen holds the pages used most.
  • On a computer the menu runs across the top of the page, under the estate's name, with every page on it.
  • Your name at the top right opens your profile, and the footer at the bottom of every page repeats the estate's contact details.

Note: What you can see depends on the rights the estate office has given you. A part of the app you have not been given yet is either hidden or shows a short note explaining what to ask for.

2. Registering and signing in

Registering takes a minute and is done once.

  • Tap Register and give your full name, email address, physical address, ERF number and phone number.
  • Choose a five-digit PIN. You sign in with your email address and that PIN, so keep it to yourself.
  • We email you a six-digit code. Type it in to finish, and you are in.
  • Next time, sign in with your email address and PIN, or with Google if you registered that way.

Note: If you do not know your ERF number, ask the estate office. It is the number the estate uses for your property, and it is how the office finds you on its list.

3. Your profile and household

Your name in the header opens your profile. This is where everything about you and your household is kept.

  • Add the people who live at your address — your spouse or partner, your children, family members, tenants and anyone who works for you — with their name, email and phone number. Someone you add can be sent their own login.
  • Apply for the rights you want, and read the estate office's answer and reason for each one.
  • Switch off any part of the app you would rather not see.
  • Choose your own colour scheme.
  • Read and sign the emergency push button terms and conditions.
  • Tell us if you have left the estate.

Note: Anything you post stays yours. Only you and the estate office can change it.

4. The supplier directory

Every supplier in the directory has been recommended by a resident, or approved by the estate office.

  • Search by name or service, or browse the categories.
  • Open a supplier to see their contact details, what they do, the areas they serve, and what other residents said about them.
  • Rate a supplier and leave your opinion after you have used them.
  • Add a supplier you would recommend. This needs the "Recommend suppliers" right from the estate office.

Note: "Community verified" means at least three residents have confirmed they used the supplier. It is not estate approval, and it is not a guarantee of the work. If a review or a supplier looks wrong, report it — the estate office sees every report.

5. Who do I contact?

The "Who do I contact?" page lists the problems residents run into most — a burst pipe, a street light out, refuse not collected — and says who to phone.

  • Each entry names the department, utility or supplier, and gives the number to call.
  • The departments page holds the estate office, municipal and utility numbers, including the after-hours numbers.

Note: The emergency numbers button is on every page, so the important numbers are always one tap away.

6. Urgent issues

An urgent issue is something the whole estate should know about now — a break-in, a road closed, a dangerous animal.

  • Urgent issues appear in the banner at the top of every page, and on the urgent issues page.
  • Each one shows what happened, where, and when it was posted.
  • When it has been dealt with it is marked resolved and moves to the history.
  • Posting one needs the "Place urgent issues" right from the estate office.

Note: Use the emergency push button for an emergency at your own home; use an urgent issue for something that affects the estate.

7. Utility interruptions and planned maintenance

This is where the estate keeps track of electricity, water, sewage and refuse interruptions.

  • Current interruptions are listed with the area affected and when the service is expected back.
  • Planned maintenance shows work that has been scheduled, with the date and time.
  • Everything that is finished moves to the history at the bottom of the page.
  • Posting or closing off a notice needs the "Edit the utilities" right.

Note: If your power or water is out and there is no notice up, phone the number on the departments page.

8. The area map

The area map shows what is happening around the estate, and where things are.

  • Markers show repairs, security concerns, hazards, police matters and places worth knowing about, such as a park or a school.
  • Some markers are a single point; others are a line drawn along a road or a route.
  • The map also shows the estate's own infrastructure — electrical boxes, manholes, water valves and street lights.
  • Adding a marker needs the "Add markers to the area map" right.

Note: You can add photos to a marker to show what you found. Photos on the map are stored privately.

9. The market place

The market place is where residents offer a service, sell something they no longer need, or advertise for work or staff.

  • Services: a service a resident offers.
  • Items: something a resident is selling.
  • Employment: a resident hiring, or looking for work.
  • Every advert is checked by the estate office before it appears, and once it is approved it shows on the market place.
  • Mark your advert sold when it is gone: it stays up for a week, then drops off by itself.
  • Posting an advert needs the "Place adverts" right.

Note: More sections are coming — aesthetic surgeons, spas and other specialist services — each as its own section on the market place.

10. The emergency push button

The push button sends a panic alert to every resident who is signed in at that moment.

  • The alert carries your name, phone number, home address, ERF number and your live location.
  • It appears on every resident's screen straight away, wherever they are in the app.
  • Before you can use it you must read and sign the terms and conditions on your profile, and the estate office must give you the "Use the emergency push button" right.
  • You can send a test alert from your profile so you know it works. A test goes out marked as a test, so that no one responds to it.

Note: Only press the push button in a real emergency. A false alarm may cost you the right to use it.

11. The estate quiz

The estate quiz runs twice a week and is played from the quiz page.

  • The standard quiz runs on the usual quiz day, the advanced quiz on the second day. Both start at the same time in the evening.
  • Questions come in five formats: multiple choice, type then choose, word wall, clue ladder and speed round.
  • The quiz opens for a set window, so start on time. Once you have played, you cannot play again.
  • The winner and the standings appear on the winners page.

Note: The quiz is played on the honour system and is marked automatically when it closes.

12. The estate office and your rights

Six things in the app need the estate office's permission before you can use them.

  • Add markers to the area map
  • Place adverts on the market place
  • Recommend suppliers
  • Edit the utilities
  • Place urgent issues
  • Use the emergency push button

Apply for the ones you want from your profile. The estate office answers each one and writes down why, and you can read every answer and reason on your profile.

Note: Administrators hold every right. The estate office desk is where applications and rights are handled.

13. What administrators accept

The estate office checks what residents send in before the rest of the estate sees it.

  • Residents: everyone who registers is listed on the estate office's resident list, where each right is allowed or refused.
  • Suppliers: a supplier added by a resident is checked before it appears in the directory.
  • Adverts: every market place advert is approved before it shows.
  • Urgent issues: who may post an urgent issue is decided by the right, and what is posted can be corrected by the estate office.
  • Rights: every application is answered with a reason the resident can read.

Note: Suppliers, reviews and adverts are moderated from the administration page.

Estate contact: Not provided.

This directory is resident-recommended. "Community verified" means at least three residents have confirmed using a supplier — it does not imply estate approval, checked qualifications or guaranteed workmanship.
